Giving Our Waste Paper a Beautiful Second Life
IWe’re proud that our retail paper bags are made from recycled paper, handcrafted locally by Saraswati Paper in Bali.
In fact, the first run of bags was made using waste paper collected from our Bali office—giving our own discarded paper a beautiful second life.
Saraswati Paper is a women-led, Australian-owned business employing a team of 20 Balinese women. Using traditional, chemical-free techniques, they create luxurious, textured paper that is dried under the sun and often embedded with natural fibres, flower petals, or plant dyes. In addition to sourcing paper from partners like Atlas Pearls, they work with a local printer to repurpose clean offcuts that would otherwise go to waste.
Saraswati also collaborates with Eco Bali to manage water responsibly and ensure that any contaminated or unusable paper is processed through proper waste channels. It’s a thoughtful example of circularity in action where everything is considered.
Once focused almost entirely on international exports, Saraswati now sees half of its products sold within Indonesia. This shift reflects a growing local consciousness: more businesses are choosing suppliers who align with their values and prioritise both people and planet. Atlas Pearls is proud to be part of that shift.

Working with Saraswati Paper ticks all the right boxes—supporting local enterprise, empowering women, reducing our waste footprint, and creating elegant, low-impact packaging solutions. As our Bali office transitions toward becoming fully paper-free, less of our packaging will be made from our own paper waste. Still, we’re proud to support this initiative and to package our pearls in a thoughtfully handcrafted, recycled product.
